Teresa E. Murphy joined the staff of Bay Area Rapid Transit in 1997 as Assistant General Manager of Administration. She has over twenty-three years of public transit experience. Prior to coming to BART, she was the Director of Sun Metro in El Paso, Texas, where she was responsible for the operation of 230 revenue vehicles and over 580 employees. She was responsible for increased rider ship for three consecutive years and received an award from the State of Texas for converting the fleet to natural gas. Ms. Murphy also served as the Executive Assistant to the Mayor of El Paso and served as the Acting Director of Aviation for the El Paso International Airport during a two-year transitional period following the retirement of the Airport Manager.
She previously held the position of Director of Operations and Maintenance for the Greater Bridgeport Transit District in Bridgeport, Connecticut; Special Projects Coordinator and Manager of Operations Support and Manager of Contracts and Procurement for the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Austin, Texas; Manager of Bus Facility Projects, Project Manager/Bus Facility Development and Superintendent of Maintenance for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County in Houston, Texas; and Maintenance Planner for Queen City Metro in Cincinnati, Ohio.
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning and Design. She was named the YWCA’s Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1982, and was awarded a UMTA fellowship in 1978, which included study of Mass Transit at Carnegie Mellon University and throughout Europe.
