On June 16, 2009, BlackRock, Inc. announced its plan to acquire Barclays Global Investors. The Barclays PLC Board of Directors will recommend that their shareholders approve the transaction at a special meeting in August 2009. The transaction is expected to close before the end of 2009. It is anticipated that the combined firm will operate as BlackRock Global Investors.
Barclays Global Investors manages the Plans' Standard & Poors 500 Index Option. The acquisition was discussed during the June 17, 2009 Investment Plans Committee meeting. The Plans' investment consultant advised that they do not have concerns with the announcement at this time but will monitor the transaction as it progresses.
The BART Investment Plans Committee (BART IPC) views communication and education as critical components to your retirement planning. BART IPC has contracted with ICMA-RC to provide individual consultation services to BART employees for the 401(a) Money Purchase Pension Plan and the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. You can meet with an ICMA-RC Retirement Plans Specialist at your work site. You can view the schedule and work locations for the summer hours . You may also schedule an appointment with the ICMA-RC Retirement Plans Specialist at the BART headquarters. In addition, each month, a Certified Financial Planner is also available for consultations at the BART headquarters. You can schedule an appointment with the Financial Planner.
Administrative Fees for the Money Purchase Pension Plan and Deferred Compensation Plan are paid by the participants. From time to time, the administrative accounts used to pay the fees have a sufficient balance that a 'fee holiday' is declared. Both plans have been on a fee holiday since March 2008. The administrative account for the Money Purchase Pension Plan needs to be replenished. You may have noticed that an administrative fee of approximately $3.50 per month has been charged to your Money Purchase Pension Plan account starting in February 2009. If you have questions please contact Peter Horikoshi in BART Benefits at phoriko@bart.gov.
